We went to the Sonnabend opening of Zaha Hadids new structural designs on saturday night and I was incredibly impressed with the power of her work. Hadid is an amazingly talented architect who studied under Rem Koolhass before breaking out on her own in the late 70′s. Her work is considered conceptually groundbreaking and she has won many international competitions. The show consisted of several smaller sculptures that looked like super futuristic furniture and one giant piece that stretched 15ft high and 25ft wide. The pieces were molded out of fiberglass and then sprayed with autobody paint for a glossy luster finish. We were invited because my old friend Kenny Schachter “curated” the show, which according to him actually involved a huge amount of production including partially financing some of the pieces. I guess its common knowledge that Zaha is famously hotheaded but it was fun to listen to Kenny describe in detail a few of her tirades that had been directed squarely at him.
