All black that is. I had the fortunate opportunity of getting to photograph Jack White with his new band “the Dead Weather” yesterday and the experience revived my flatlining motivation to ever shoot bands again. He is truly an inspirational figure and his full power was on display Tuesday night at the Bowery ballroom where “TDW” kicked ass for over an hour. With Jack on drums and the exquisitely cool Alison Mosshart from The Kills as lead singer, the band powered through their set all in black leather and all white guitars. Very nice touch. One of the shots that we were doing involved liquid projections and when asked which color he would like to have projected on him, Jack replied “No red, No red for this band” He picked blue. Jack is a big fan of all things old and so I brought a bag of my old film cameras including the cherrywood Wista field 4×5, the 1958 Rolliflex and the Polaroid 110a (of which I have just a few packs of 665 left for). He told me that he has a giant photo studio in the back of the building where he has his “ThirdMan” Records. If you are looking for a place to shoot in Nashville, call him up! And in case you’re interested, he has two freezers filled with Polaroid. (but I dont think he is going to sell any!)
Here is a video I made from one 3 minute roll of bolex 16mm film and the photos I shot with The White Stripes on the Staten Island Ferry in July of 2001
That was my first “real” interview for Bust, and it was a doozy. You make the SI Ferry look like an amazing adventure here. I love that video
