BIO Michael Lavine took his first photograph with a pinhole camera made out of a milk carton when he was ten. Growing up in Denver, Colorado he played high school lacrosse and worked as the yearbook photographer. In the early 80’s He attended The Evergreen State College in Olympia WA where he fell in with a group of misfits and documented the underground punk scene unfolding on the streets of Seattle. 26 years later, Abrams published a book of Michaels photographs from that time titled GRUNGE, the quintessential book of images documenting the birth of that infamous movement. In 1985 he moved to NYC where he attended Parsons School of Design and interned with fashion photographer Francesco Scavullo. Experimenting with dramatic compositions and a radical color palette, he developed his own unique, wild, in your face style and immediately went to work shooting music. Michael’s photography of bands such as Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, Pavement, and Dinosaur Jr defined the alternative music scene of the 90’s. In the fall of 1996 Simon & Schuster published “Noise from the Underground”. Michael expanded his work to the hip hop community, shooting album covers for major artists such as Puffy, Lil’ Kim, Foxy Brown, The Wu Tang and Notorious B.I.G. And to the art world, where over the course of seven years he had three shows at Team Gallery in Chelsea, exhibiting photographs from a series of artist portraits including Elizabeth Peyton, Karen Kilimnick and John Currin. Recently, Michael has become interested in creating a more complex body of work driven by emotionally loaded narratives. For the last several years he has been writing and directing dramatic short films. His latest film WEEKEND AWAY, is a character study about a woman who escapes for the weekend. The short played at festivals all around the country. Michael’s Instagram project, PALE SOULS is a love story which pairs photographs with poetic prose and explores the rich interior landscape of sadness and loss. Michaels project INTERIOR LIVES is a portrait series of couples photographed at home, showing them express their own unique aesthetic through how they live.
